i-EM at CARES: Satellite-Based Methane Monitoring in Energy Systems

Feb 26, 2026

On 16 February, the University of Siena hosted the presentation of the regional project CARES – Climate-Aware Robotics for Energy Systems, an initiative focused on developing advanced solutions for the monitoring and inspection of energy infrastructures, with particular attention to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

CARES aims to implement an integrated and innovative system capable of supporting the management of energy infrastructures through drones, satellites, and robotic technologies, using advanced sensors and data analysis tools. The initiative is designed to prevent operational issues, reduce the risk of accidents, and accurately quantify emissions, with a specific focus on methane.

At the workshop, preliminary results from the project partners — including Nuovo Pignone Tecnologie, i‑EM, Bluebiloba and the University of Siena (DIISM) — were showcased.

Representing i‑EM, Data Scientist Jacopo Baldacci delivered a presentation titled:
“Analisi di immagini satellitari per il monitoraggio di emissioni di metano (Obiettivo Operativo 4 – Introduzione e Risultati Parziali)”

The talk focused on the use of satellite data and advanced analytical techniques for detecting and quantifying methane emissions. The methodologies presented are a key component of the project’s overall framework, contributing reliable and scalable tools for large‑scale environmental monitoring.

i‑EM’s involvement in the CARES project reaffirms its commitment to developing innovative technological solutions that support the energy transition, strengthen infrastructure safety and promote environmental sustainability.
